International Day of Rural Women 2014

20 Oct 2014

80 Women from across North Queensland travelled to Mareeba to celebrate the International Day of Rural Women in October.

Northern Gulf Resource Management Group and Cape York Natural Resource Management partnered to bring together women from across the region for the Resourcing Women of the North Event which is an opportunity for Rural Women to connect and learn about Natural Resource Management and opportunities in business.

A theme that came out of the day was the inspiration women drew from each other’s stories, with Key Note Speaker Karen Brook, from KBS & Co, speaking on the challenges of running a business and the secret to bringing your ideas to life.  This was followed by a panel session with four women from the region, Michelle Bell-Turner, Debbie Nucifora, Fiona George and Franzicka Inderbitzen sharing their journeys in business.  In the discussions following the panel session, it was acknowledged that all the women in the room have a story to tell and that the event was a great opportunity to share those stories, learn from each other’s experiences and connect with and support each other.

In the afternoon participants broke off into small groups to get some practical tips with experts in the concurrent sessions on Beef $ense, Innovative Agriculture, Holistic Management, Marketing using the web and Grant Writing

A highlight of the event was the Rural Women’s Dinner which kicked off with an entertaining skit from the Mareeba Theatre Group followed by Writer, Presenter and Producer Anna Daniels, talking on her journey in the media, being yourself and how to showcase rural and regional Australia including some funny clips from her career.

The event was facilitated by Julia Telford from Engage and Create consulting and was made possible through funding from Northern Gulf Resource Management Group, Cape York Natural Resource Management, Caring for our Country, Mareeba Community Bank Branch - Bendigo Bank, David Kempton and the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal.

This is the 3rd Resourcing Women of the North Event held this year.  Resourcing Women of the North is proving to be a popular way for women to engage in issues and challenges facing them and their families on their properties.  More highlights from the event can be seen on the NGRMG facebook event page
