International Day of Rural Women celebrated in Mareeba

On the 15th October 2015 80 women from around North Queensland gathered at Mareeba to celebrate the International Day of Rural Women.

Northern Gulf Resource Management Group’s Vickie Mylrea worked with a steering committee of local rural women - Jess Fealy, Karen Pedersen and Georgina Kruse along with Leanne Kruss from Mareeba District Fruit and Vegie Growers Association (MDFVGA), Mandy Lindsay from Mareeba State High School and Erica Blumson (also from NGRMG), to organise the event which gave Rural Women an opportunity to connect and set goals and seek opportunities.

Key Note Speaker Karen Brook, from KBS & Co, spoke on the secrets of bringing your ideas to life.  The first session before morning tea looked at setting and achieving big worthy goals and how to close the gap between what we know we should do and what we actually do.

After a delicious lunch catered by Love Lee Cooking, using local produce, the next session explored opportunities for diversification in business.  After which the ladies broke into groups for a mastermind session to tap into the wisdom and knowledge within the group.

The event was facilitated by Qld Rural Regional and Remote Women’s Network (QRRRWN) Strong Leadership Award recipient Leanne Kruss (MDFVG) and was made possible through funding from Northern Gulf Resource Management Group.  The Mareeba High School Agriculture students, under the guidance of Agriculture Teacher Mandy Lindsay and with assistance from the steering committee provided and prepared the venue and were also able to participate on the day.

Some of the feedback included: excellent motivational morning; Keep up the excellent (work). Thank you steering committee, would like to join this committee if possibly to help next year

NGRMG has hosted Resourcing Women of the North events at Mt Surprise, Normanton and by webinar.  This was the 2nd RWOTN event to be held in Mareeba on the International Day of Rural Women and is proving to be a popular way for women to engage in issues and challenges facing them and their families on their properties.
