Tropical Weeds Research Centre

Tropical Weeds Research Centre (TWRC) (Queensland Government)

Scientific staff at the TWRC contribute to three of Biosecurity Queensland's statewide invasive plant and animal research programs:

  • integrated weed management
  • landscape protection and restoration
  • pest animal management.

Capabilities

The TWRC has built a strong reputation for its tropical pest research, particularly in the fields of integrated weeds management, Class 1 weeds and feral pig management.

Officers work from Charters Towers on pest issues associated with the dry tropics, with some officers based at the Centre for Wet Tropics Agriculture near South Johnstone undertake pest research in the wet tropics of northern Queensland.

Facilities

The TWRC is located on some 16 hectares on the edge of Charters Towers. While many research activities are carried out directly on collaborators' properties, the research centre offers a range of important research facilities, including:

  • three glasshouses
  • shadehouses and plant-rearing shade tunnels
  • chemistry laboratory and chemical storage facility
  • seed laboratory
  • entomology laboratory
  • zoology laboratory
  • herbicide spray gantry
  • specialist conference facility
