Methodology for the Community Survey

Latest local telephone books for the centres of Karumba and Normanton (which also includes stations in the area), Croydon Shire, Etheridge Shire, Mareeba and Atherton were obtained. For the Mareeba and Atherton books, households were identified that were located in the catchment area of the Mitchell River.
Random samples were taken of eligible numbers and up to four calls were made to seek an interview.

Because of the comparatively large population in the upper Mitchell catchment area and a need to obtain a reasonably robust sample in centres like Karumba, Normanton, Croydon and Etheridge Shires, the sample in these centres was double that of the Mitchell catchment area from the Mareeba and Atherton books. No telephone book lists were available for Kowanyama.
Where appropriate in this report, the sample is re-weighted to reflect true population relationships.

Total target sample of interviews completed was 300.
